We are bringing back the New Year’s Eve Bash! The Decorah Parks and Recreation Department invites the community to attend the 25^th Annual New Year’s Eve Bash sponsored by Decorah Bank & Trust and Gundersen Health System!  This free family friendly event will be held Saturday, December 31, 5:00-9:00pm, in the Luther College Regents Center. The evening includes open swimming, basketball, tennis, pickleball, a Bouncy House for the little ones, and more.  Concession items including pizza, popcorn, water and Gatorade will be available for purchase.  Please enter the Luther College Regents Center using the circle drive entrance on the west side of the building. No registration required, just show up!

Basketball Open Gym will be held in the Carrie Lee Gymnasium. Please enter the gym using the doors on the East side of the building along Winnebago Street. The basketball open gym schedule is listed below.

Family Open Basketball – Unstructured basketball play. Little Tykes hoops and basketballs will be available for younger kids. All children 4^th grade & under must be accompanied by an adult!

Outdoor drop-in pickleball play at the City of Decorah tennis courts will continue during the times listed below as long as weather permits.

Indoor Pickleball Play

Beginning Friday, October 14, 2022 drop-in pickleball play will be held in the North Gym of the Regents Center at Luther College.  Pickleball is a drop in activity open to individuals of all ages and abilities, but all individuals must have a Luther College Community Pass.

Participate in Decorah Parks & Recreation’s Turkey Trot Thursday, November 24 thru Sunday, November 27!

Run or walk the 5k or 1-mile loop that we have marked out in the Decorah Community Prairie anytime Thursday, November 24 thru Sunday, November 27. Submit your run/walk online and send a photo of you completing your turkey trot to decorahrec@gmail.com to be entered in a drawing to win a prize! This can be a fun challenge for individuals or for your entire household. The Decorah Community Prairie is located at the south end of Ohio Street (over the levee) in Decorah.

2022 Turkey Shoot Results

144 people participated in the 40^th Annual Decorah Park-Rec. Turkey Shoot on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. This parent-child free throw contest was held in the Decorah High School gym.  Participants were divided into age categories based on the combined ages of the participating parent and child. A turkey was awarded to the top scoring team in each category.  Turkeys were provided by Decorah Fareway and other prizes were purchased with donations from T-Bocks Sports Bar & Grill, Deco Products, The Family Table, Gunderson Health System, and Total Tree Care.  Turkey and drawing prize winners should pick up their certificate or prize in the Park-Rec. Office, which is open Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Please note the Park-Rec Office is closed Friday, November 11 in observance of Veterans Day.

The 40^th Annual Decorah Park-Rec. Turkey Shoot will be held in the Decorah High School Main Gym on Tuesday, November 8, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm. In this fun family event, a parent and child team up, combine their ages to determine their competition bracket, and each shoot 10 free throws in an attempt to win a certificate for a free turkey. In addition, all teams are eligible for a prize drawing. Winning teams will be posted on the Park-Rec. website and Facebook page by 5:00 pm Wednesday, November 9.  This is a free activity, no need to register, just show up!  This event is sponsored by Deco Products Company, The Family Table Restaurant, Fareway, Gundersen Health System, T-Bocks Sports Bar & Grill, and Total Tree Care.

Decorah Parks & Recreation and local pickleball enthusiasts are hosting free introduction to pickleball classes Thursday, October 6th at the Decorah City Tennis Courts. Classes are free and open to the public with two time slots to choose from. The morning class will run 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and the evening class will run 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Both classes will be identical, and will focus on basic pickleball instruction and score keeping. Registration is not being taken for these classes; participants should show up at the courts at their preferred class time. Participants are encouraged to bring their own paddle and ball. Limited equipment will be available for those who do not have their own. Decorah Parks and Recreation fall program begins Monday, August 15. Registration can be completed online or in the Park-Rec Office. 

The following programs will be offered by Decorah Parks & Recreation in September and October. A complete list of programs and our registration form can also be viewed in our fall brochure.

Flag Football is open to students in 1st thru 6th grade. This program is held Saturday mornings, September 10 thru October 15, at Will Baker Athletic Fields.  Game mornings will consist of a short practice followed by a game.  Games will not be rescheduled if cancelled due to weather. Registered players should pick up their shirts and schedules in the Park-Rec Office Thursday, September 8. Registration due Wednesday, August 24.

Spikesters Volleyball is open to students in 3rd thru 6th grade. This program meets in the Carrie Lee Elementary Gym on Saturday mornings,  September 10 thru October 15.  Skills are taught weekly and then put to use in game-like situations.  Shirts and schedules will be available for pick up in the Park-Rec Office Thursday, September 8. Registration due Wednesday, August 24.

Adult Coed Slowpitch Softball: League play is Wednesday evenings beginning September 7 and running thru late October.  Games are played at Diamond #2 (near the Tennis Courts).  Teams consist of at least 5 male and 5 female players, with a roster maximum of 20.  Teams are responsible for umping games; 12-inch game balls are supplied. Official roster forms may be downloaded from our website or picked up at the Park-Rec. Office.  Schedules will be emailed to captains. Games balls will be available in the office on Tuesday, September 6. Registration due Friday, August 26.

Game Plan is open to students in 1st & 2nd grades. This program meets right after school and will include a variety of activities including sports and yard games! This program meets Thursdays, September 22 thru October 13, 3:15-4:00pm. Students will meet in the John Cline gym and walk over to the green space in the outfield of Diamond #2.  Maximum of 20 participants. Registration due Friday, September 16.

TOUCH-A-TRUCK – A fun, free, open house event for the whole family. No need to register, just show up! Join us in the parking lot behind the Decorah Fire Department on Saturday, October 15, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.  Kids will have the opportunity to explore their favorite vehicles including police, fire and emergency vehicles, construction equipment, and city maintenance vehicles.  This event is co-hosted with the Decorah Fire Department in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week, and includes a free hot dog lunch.
