Free Tree Workshops

The Decorah Tree Board , the Iowa State University Extension Office, Trees Foreever, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources are hosting two free workshops.

Ash Trees and Emerald Ash Borer – Learn to identify Ash trees on your property and how to look for signs of Emerald Ash Borer.  Volunteers will also answer your questions & Concerns. 6pm Tuesday, February 27th in the City Hall Council Chambers. Led by Emma Hannigan

Pruning and Tree Care 101 – Learn the basic pruning techniques to help keep your trees healthy. Hands on lesson and practice on young trees. 6pm Monday, March 12 in the Decorah Parks & Recreation Maintenance Shop near Whalen Cabin. Led by Meredith Borchardt.

Free Fly Fishing Workshop – Sat, Feb 10

Join us in the Decorah High School gym Saturday, Feberuay 10, 10am-12noon for this free event!

This workshop is free and open to anglers of all ages and levels of experience. 12 & under must be accompanied by an adult. Local casting instructors will discuss equipment, demonstrate basic casts, and work with participants on their fly casting skills. Fly tying demonstrations will also be available.

The Iowa Driftless Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Decorah Parks & Recreation, and Winneshiek County Conservation will co-host this free workshop. No registration required, just show up.

The Great Inflate & Pancake Breakfast

Join us for our FIRST EVER inflatable event 10am-2pm Saturday, February 24 in the Decorah High School gyms!

Participants can bounce, climb, slide, and run through 7 over-sized inflatables. This event features obstacle courses, a giant slide, toddler zone, and other inflatables provided by KidAgain Inflatable Fun Shows out of La Crosse. The Lions Club will be providing a pancake breakfast for a free will offering that will support the Tree Bank and reforesting Decorah’s parks. The Tree Board will also be available to answer questions and share information.

Registration is taken at the event, but forms can be filled out ahead of time and brought with you to speed up the process on the day of the event.  Click here to download a registration form. Cost is $5 per participant. Observers are free.

Ice Rink Opens at 1pm Thursday, December 28

The ice rink and warming house will open for the season at 1pm Thursday, December 28. The ice rink is always open for skating throughout the winter except when the ‘Stay Off Ice’ sign is posted. The Wayside Warming House is open and staffed throughout the season during the hours specified below.

Monday – Thursday     3:00pm-7:00pm

Friday                             3:00pm – 9:00pm

Saturday                         1:00pm – 9:00pm

Sunday                            1:00pm – 7:00pm

Please Note: On no school days the warming house opens at 1pm.

Free New Year’s Eve Bash

Decorah Parks & Recreation is hosting a free New Year’s Eve Bash 6:30-10:30pm on Sunday, December 31 in the Luther College Regents Center. 

This event is sponsored by Decorah Bank & Trust and Gundersen Health System and features fun activities for the whole family including open indoor swimming, a bouncy house, basketball, football, tennis, racquetball, and pickleball. The New Year’s Eve Bash is free and open to the public with no registration required.

Pizza, Gatorade, water and other food items will be available for purchase at the concession stand.

Family & 5th-8th Grade Open Basketball – Free Activity

Family Open Basketball – a free drop-in activity for 4th grade and under with a parent
This is an opportunity for kids and parents to get out of the house and enjoy some unstructured basketball play time in the gym. Little Tykes hoops and basketballs will be available for younger kids. Baskets will be lowered to 8 and 9 feet for those that are a bit older. This activity will be in the Carrie Lee Elementary Gym (enter through the north doors) on Saturdays from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, November 11 thru February 17. All children must be accompanied by an adult. 5th-8th grade Open Basketball– a free drop-in activity
Open basketball play for Decorah 5th thru 8th grade students in the Carrie Lee Elementary Gym (enter through the north doors) on Sundays and “no school” days, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm, November 12 thru February 18. Click here for the complete 5th-8th grade Open Basketball schedule.

Palisades Park Closed to Vehicle Traffic

The road through Palisades Park is closed to vehicle traffic for the season. Pedestrians may continue to visit the park and use its trail system. For more information about Decorah’s park system visit https://parks.decorahia.org/decorah-parks.

Dug Road Closed for Repair

Dug Road is closed to all users.

Repairs have begun on the Dug Road portion of the Trout Run Trail. The Dug Road section of the trail will be closed until work is complete. Thank you for your patience during construction.

3rd grade Sharp Shooters November 18 Time Changed to 12:15pm

Due to a performance in the Carrie Lee auditorium this Saturday, November 18 the time of the 3rd grade girls  and 3rd grade boys basketball sessions must be adjusted. All 3rd graders (boys and girls) should meet in the Carrie Lee gym at 12:15pm Saturday, November 18.  All other grade levels will continue as originally scheduled.

Please note that this is a different time than last week. This is an adjustment that must be made for this one Saturday. We will return to the originally scheduled times next Saturday, November 25. We apologize for the change in schedule and thank you for understanding.

G2G Christmas Celebration for Adults with Special Needs

Decorah’s Get-2-Gether Committee and Decorah Parks and Recreation are hosting a free Christmas Celebration for adults with specials needs from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Elks Lodge in Decorah.  Adults with special needs are invited to join Decorah Parks & Recreation and Luther Women’s Soccer Team volunteers for a morning of games, wooden reindeer making, music, card making, cookie decorating and a visit from Santa.

Sponsors and community donations allow G2G volunteers to offer these events at no cost to participants.  Participants should register for this event by Wednesday, November 29, to allow volunteers to plan accordingly.
