Community Prairie Burn Today
Decorah, IA (Friday, April 10, 2026) – Conditions are favorable to burn select sections of the Community Prairie today. The burn will last 2-3 hours. It will be conducted by Decorah Parks and Recreation staff who have extensive experience and training in prairie management practices.
Prairie burning is important component to help maintain a healthy prairie ecosystem. Controlled burns remove invasives (i.e., Crown Vetch), woody species and dead plant litter which allows sunlight and other resources to reach the soil. This management practice stimulates native plant growth, increases the recycling of nutrients, improves habitat for wildlife and reduces “fuel” build up in the prairie.
